Before entering the political world, Diljeet Brar served in a variety of leadership roles at different organizations. Before immigrating to Canada, he served in various positions in Agriculture Industry, and then as Assistant Professor at the world-renowned Punjab Agricultural University. He also served as training organizer for agriculture officers, farmers, farm women, ex-army personnel, and rural youth.
Diljeet mentored university students in performing arts, wrote hundreds of articles for farmers and community members, and authored and coauthored books. He presented TV programs in India and Canada. He served as a radio broadcaster, warehouse worker, and Project Manager (Environmental) in British Columbia.
After his adventurous relocation to Manitoba, he worked briefly as Research Associate at University of Manitoba & Research Technician at AgQuest Minto before serving as an Extension Coordinator with Manitoba Agriculture from 2014-2018.
Prior to being elected as an MLA, Diljeet has been an active community leader in Manitoba as a founding director of Bulla Arts International Inc., a cultural and personality development school for children and youth. He also played a lead role in establishing the Baba Nanak Scholarship for Human Rights Education at University of Manitoba and fundraising for Seven Oaks Performing Arts Center at Garden City Collegiate in 2018.
Creating history as the first Turbaned MLA elected to the Manitoba Legislature as the MLA for Burrows in 2019, Diljeet took on the role of the NDP's critic for Agriculture and Sport, Culture & Heritage, where he fought for Manitoba farmers, livestock producers, crownland lease holders and for the betterment of Sport, Culture & Heritage infrastructure for Manitobans. In May 2022, Diljeet’s first legislation, The Turban Day Act, was passed unanimously, commemorating the significance of Turban for the Sikh community. Manitoba is the only province in Canada to have legislated Turban Day.
Passionate about nurturing youth leadership, Diljeet mentors emerging leaders in various capacities and feels proud seeing his students in leadership roles across Manitoba and beyond. He also likes to write poems and songs in Punjabi language and do pencil sketching.
Diljeet has the honour of delivering the Indigenous land acknowledgment in Punjabi language inside the Manitoba Legislature chamber. He strongly believes that cross cultural understanding and respect is important to harmonize our society, which is under threat from intolerance, extremism, hatred and politics of division.
Re-elected in 2023, Diljeet serves as Deputy Whip for the NDP Caucus, member of various caucus and cabinet committees, and the legislative assistant to the Minister of Sport, Culture & Heritage. He also serves as Assistant Deputy Speaker for the Manitoba Legislative Assembly.
