NDP Call for Return of House to Fight for Jobs

April 22, 2020

Treaty 1 Territory, Winnipeg, MB—Wab Kinew, Leader of the NDP Official Opposition, is urging the Pallister government to immediately reconvene the House in order to fight for jobs and financial assistance for families and to hold the Government to account for its layoffs and wage reductions.

“The Manitoba NDP is seeking an immediate return to the legislature to push back on job cuts and wage reductions. The Pallister Conservatives have forced more than a thousand layoffs in the last two days with more to come. Now more than ever, the government needs oversight and accountability,” said Kinew. “The Official Opposition’s job is to fight for Manitoban jobs—and if front line workers can continue to show up to work then MLAs should do the same.”

The Official Opposition is ready to work with government to safely reconvene the House by implementing social distancing protocols and/or by participating in virtual sittings.

Legislative Assembly rules dictate the government can call the House back from a recess at any time or it can be done by agreement of the House Leaders and the Speaker.

The Official Opposition remains committed to working with the province to support the fight against COVID-19.
