NDP Fight to Protect Abortion Rights

April 27, 2023

Treaty 1 and Dakota Territory, Homeland of the Red River Métis, Winnipeg MB - With abortion rights under threat across the United States, the Manitoba NDP took action today to defend abortion rights in Manitoba by bringing Bill 211 forward for second reading.

“Abortion is healthcare,” said NDP MLA Nahanni Fontaine, who introduced Bill 211. “As US States increasingly turn back the clock on bodily autonomy by introducing abortion bans, we know that more Americans will come to Canada seeking abortions. It is critical we protect those seeking abortions and the healthcare professionals providing them.”

Many US states have introduced bans on abortion since Roe v. Wade was overturned, and several of those, allow abortion providers to be prosecuted. By ensuring Manitoban abortion providers cannot be subject to civil judgements of a court outside Manitoba, Bill 211 will protect Manitoban healthcare providers and safeguard the access to abortion in Manitoba for anyone seeking it.
