NDP Stands with Indian Farm Families in MB

October 27, 2020

Treaty 1 Territory, Winnipeg MB – Today, MLA and Critic for Agriculture Diljeet Brar called for action to help Indian farmers, and to protect the incomes of the Manitobans who rely on them.

Agricultural reforms in India have had a ripple effect for many Indian families living in Manitoba. Many Punjabi families here have family farms in India, or support families back home. Recent legislative changes in India will have long-term detrimental effects on the future of their families both here and abroad.

“Many farmers in India are family-run businesses on small tracts of land, without space for storage of goods for market. The Modi government has made legislative changes that removes protections for small farmers and producers in India,” said MLA Diljeet Brar. “Without government regulation that helps small producers push their goods to consumers, large conglomerates and corporations will dominate, meaning small farmers will be exploited and forced to sell below market value. Today, the Manitoba NDP Caucus stands for ethical and fair treatment of working people in India and around the world.”
