Malaya Marcelino

  • Critic for Immigration and the Status of Women

Malaya Marcelino is a community advocate, communications specialist and mother.

Malaya immigrated from the Philippines as a child with her family, who have been dedicated to improving the lives of newcomers ever since they arrived in Winnipeg. Her mother and uncle, Flor and Ted Marcelino, served as long time MLAs and her father was recently made an Honorary Consul General of the Philippines. Malaya was taught by example that when you serve others, you do it without the expectation of anything in return.

As the NDP Official Opposition’s Critic for Immigration, Malaya is focused on creating good jobs for newcomers with better quality labour conditions, as well as more recreation opportunities and health care options for inner-city families. As the Critic for Status of Women Malaya is fighting against cuts to women’s health care and wants to close the gender gap for working women.
