Pallister Privatizes Part of Hydro

October 1, 2020

Treaty 1 Territory, Winnipeg MB - The Manitoba NDP confirmed today the Pallister government has broken up and sold off a wholly-owned subsidiary of Manitoba Hydro, Teshmont.

“This move to break up and privatize part of Manitoba is a terrible move that will raise rates for regular families”, said Wab Kinew, leader of the Manitoba NDP. “This part of Hydro made money – and helped keep good jobs in our province. We know this is the first step in the Pallister government’s plans for privatization”.

A corporate news release issued this morning confirms the sale of Teshmont, which is described as having a “global reputation as leaders in advanced power transmission engineering”.

“This is a shameful day for the Pallister government and Manitoba Hydro,” said MLA Adrien Sala, Official Opposition Critic for Manitoba Hydro. “The privatization of this part of Hydro is going to cost Manitobans millions, will put good jobs at risk, and further erode and undermine our most important Crown Corporation. The Pallister government should immediately back off its privatization plans”.

The Manitoba NDP reiterated its plans to introduce legislation, which would require a vote by the people of Manitoba prior to the sale of any subsidiary of Manitoba Hydro.
