PC Government Policy Forces Winnipeg Patient to Flin Flon as Family Fears for Her Mental Health and Recovery

December 3, 2021

Treaty 1 and Dakota Territory, Homeland of the Métis Nation, Winnipeg MB— Last night Kristina Markus, who is recovering from in hospital, was transferred from Seven Oaks hospital to Flin Flon because there were not enough hospital beds in Winnipeg. Her family reached out to NDP Leader Wab Kinew out of concern for her sister’s recovery and mental health.

“Kristina Markus never should have been transferred so far away from her family and support system,” said Kinew. “Our healthcare system is breaking down and Manitobans like Kristina are paying the price. This is a direct result of the PCs cuts to healthcare and Premier Stefanson needs to fix it now. As Health Minister she transferred 57 patients out of province and now she is transferring patients' hours away from their home communities. Premier Stefanson needs to tell Manitobans she will stop these transfers immediately, abandon this policy and bring Kristia home today.”

Kristina requires support for dialysis and mobility issues and was in hospital for short term treatment. Instead of staying in Winnipeg she was sent hundreds of kilometers and an 8 hour drive away. Her family was told last night she would be transferred to Flin Flon to make room for other patients in Winnipeg.
