PCs Hide Non-Binary Option on Manitoba Health Cards

July 16, 2021

Treaty 1 Territory, Homeland of the Métis Nation, Winnipeg MB— During non-binary awareness week, the Manitoba NDP are calling out the PCs for hiding a change to Manitoba Health Card gender identification that allows people to select a non-binary option. This unannounced change follows the 2019 the Human Rights ruling that found the PC government’s refusal to list a non-binary option on birth certificate was discriminatory.

“Many Manitobans have been waiting for years to have their Health Cards corrected so they can have gender affirming health identification,” said NDP Healthcare critic Uzoma Asagwara. “This is a human rights issue - proper identification has an impact on a person’s emotional and mental wellbeing. The fact that the PC government is trying to keep these changes under the radar is just shameful. The PCs need to make these necessary changes public so gender diverse and non-binary Manitobans can take full advantage of their basic human rights.”
